Laboratory Technician

The Role

The Rosalind Franklin Institute (the Franklin) is a UK national institute creating technology for life science discovery and human health. We work across disciplines; integrating biology, chemistry, imaging physics and applying AI to understand and engineer life.

As a Laboratory Technician you will be responsible for supporting laboratory-based scientific investigations, by carrying out routine technical tasks and assisting with running samples and training for new starters to ensure the smooth running of the labs. 

You will be carrying out delegated tasks associated with the daily operation of the laboratory and basic equipment maintenance for example with UPLC, mass spectrometry, flash chromatography and protein purification systems.

Key Responsibilities

As a Laboratory Technician you will: 

  • Store, organise chemicals and contribute to the maintenance of the laboratory chemical inventory system.
  • Maintain equipment according to a maintenance schedule by carrying out basic tasks like cleaning and replenishing buffers, defrosting fridges, changing oil in vacuum pumps. Liaising with contractors for equipment maintenance when required.
  • Perform routine walkabouts to identify safety hazards and supportively intervene when required, contribute to the general cleanliness and orderly housekeeping of the lab space.
  • Record calibration and test results to enable proactive maintenance for laboratory equipment.
  • Provide assistance with the day to day running of the lab, including replenishing solvents and liquid nitrogen, notifying researchers of deliveries and assisting with daily removal of waste.
  • Participate in training and supervision of research students using the laboratory.
  • Take responsibility with others for ensuring that work in the laboratory is conducted safely and in accordance with local health and safety policies.
  • Assist with checking laboratory inventory and ordering laboratory consumables according to the laboratory needs.
